Masada

Shalom,

Mirjams parents had been the first parents that visited us in Israel. Not just Mirjam had been excited, also Luca and I had been looking forward the day the parents come. That is because we can take part on what they do and what, for example Mirjam got from her parents.

The first they arrived, we had an enjoyable diner with bread, vegetables cheese etc. Cheese....Cheese is so expensive here, so Luca and I felt like being in heaven when we ate the good cheese. Another day they invited us to eat pizza! You quickly recognize, that parents of Mirjam are very nice and generously and, most importantly, Her father looks like Frank Buschmann (a famous German moderator)!

I get along very well with them and I was happy, that they invited us to drive with them to Masada! To drive! Not in a bus! In a car! Luxury! Of course Luca and I joined that trip to Masada.

We woke up on a Sunday, very early as usual, had breakfast and as planned Mirjam arrived too late. That was good for us, because we had been running late too. We got in the car and the journey started. Normally it takes 3 hours from Haifa to Masada. The problem was, that we went their on a Sunday morning. Remember? Sunday morning here is like Monday morning in Germany. A lot of traffic. In the end it took us 5 hours to get their, but the last hour had been very nice to drive, because we were just driving along a lonely road in the desert. Every hundert high meters, their had been a sign which says at which hight we had been . We made, I think over 600 high meters. When we finally arrived, the long way had been worth it. In the middle of the desert, near the Dead Sea, was a big rock with a fallen fortress on it.

Their are two possibilities to get up their. By a cable car, or by foot. Thanks to the sportive parents of Mirjam, we had the opportunity to go up their. I do not know how many high meters we made, but it had been a lot. Normally it takes 45 minutes to get up their. We made it in 30!

A the top you see, besides the tourist, may broken walls and you have a extra-ordinary view over the desert! We walked around, read something about the history and the architecture, made photos and just enjoyed.

Interesting about the history of Masada is how the jews in it died. When the romans tried to get in the fort the jews in it decided to rather die in freedom, then live in slavery. Every man was responsible for his family, so every man had toil his family, after that the mans decided to choose 10 of them who should kill the rest and finally one who should kill himself. It is said, that the romans found the mans laying over their family with outspread arms.

It is in interesting thought "rather to die in freedom, then to live in slavery". It made me think a lot about it, but I do not really know what to think about. If the story is true, then the man up their had to be very courageous, merciful but a bit heartless too.

Thanks for reading and Lehitraot,

SK
